Labour Codes#4 : Gig, Unorganised, and Platform Workers – Covered for Benefits
The gig and platform working has grown rapidly in urban parts of India. While it offers workers a flexibility and autonomy it had raised concerns around social security benefits for gig workers.
The Code on Social Security now provides benefits to gig- worker [defined under Section 2(35)], platform worker [defined under Section 2(61)], and Unorganized Worker [defined under Section 2(86)]. Further, the Central Government shall also form a National Social Security Board for framing suitable schemes for the unorganised workers to exercise the conferred powers, and to perform the assigned functions.
Further, the Central Government may also frame and notify social security benefit scheme for Unorganised Worker, relating to matters of:
- (i) Life and Disability Cover
- (ii) health and maternity benefits
- (iii)old age protection,
- (iv) education and
- (v) any other benefit as
may be determined.
And for Gig Worker and Platform worker relating to matters of:
- (i) Life and Disability Cover
- (ii) accident insurance
- (iii) health and maternity benefits
- (iv) old age protection,
- (v) creche and
- (vi) any other benefit as may be determined.
